G'day,

As the relatively-boring Winter months wane, and our thoughts turn to Spring and all those expeditions into 'Tiger Country' we'll make (that will produce far bigger bass than our PB), I want to get myself an affordable 406MHz PLB or EPIRB that's compact and is manually activated (not one that goes off when it's in the water).

I'd be keen to know what you use, where you bought it and what you pald for it.

Cheers,

Ron

I'll be playing close attention to this thread Ron as I have often thought of getting an EPIRB or similar device enabling me to do some multi-day trips in some remote places. I wouldn't dare go without one.

I'll do the same fraser, it wasn't long ago that I had my first bee sting to the neck way up in a remte river system. Sitting on a rock waiting to see if I was gonna cark it wasn't fun.

I used to take an EPIRB but have now switched to a PLB. My mate Gus (Lizardboy) purchased a very good quality PLB (ex hire) that we use on trips now and he kindly lets me use when I am doing trips without him. I will try to get him to post the details. I would suggest you get a PLB between a few mates and share it, that reduces the price per person. I get into some pretty remote spots but would never do a wild country trip without one, it is very very cheap insurance.

Thanks Steve,

I intended to get a PLB instead of an EPIRB - that's more suited to marine use. Was waiting (in vain I think) for the price to get down around that of a mobile phone, but until China starts producing a quality PLB, We'll comtinue paying through the nose for units out of the USA

Good thread. Ive done a fair bit of bear grillsing into drop-bear country when I was a kid without any saftey backup and now that seems pretty stupid. I will also be investing in a PLB before any future missions.

Of the reviews I have read the KTi Mini-Sat-G 406Mhz PLB seems to be the preferred model, it is Aussie, it has longer battery life and warranty, better GPS accuracy, activates for 4 days, Dimensions KTi: 125mm x 84mm x 35mm, has strobe and mirror but is the most expensive.

But when you say most expensive it is cheaper than your tackle for sure.

My 2 cents worth.
