Well I've done it again! With winter well and truly here, I thought it was time to upgrade my fishing gear while my missus was visiting a friend in the states. So I headed down to my local tackle store and started to browz around for some nice gear to keep me keen for the coming season. Now, I had only just purchased a Loomis two piece dropshot and a nice little daiwa luvius reel and had really thought that would do me for a while. Yeah right! The next thing I know I'm walking out with another Loomis dropshot to add to the collection. So off home I went to marry it up with a little shimano number I had at home. Um, the marrage went sour two days later when I walked into the store for a couple of poppers. Next thing you know I'm on my way home with a new daiwa certate 1003. For some unknown reason my pocket was a little lighter. Anyway, back home I lined it up with some new braid and sat back content. Content? Not really. I had seen a nice Loomis baitcaster rod sitting lonely on the shelf, now being the devout humanitarian I had to give it a home. So! Off I went too liberate it from its dusty confines, besides, it came with a really nice bag. Yeah? a nice bag. Hey anything to justify the purchase. But what about a new baitcaster you say. Um, yeah. Ok so I also liberated a daiwa alphas from the cabinet. I really think something is wrong with my pocket now, almost non existent. Any more you say? Well no. Thats it, honest. except what use are all these new rods and reels without something new to cast into the water. Now I'm not gonna get into the nitty gritty of all the lures I bought, but lets just say a couple of dozen different hard bodies made me wonder? Is this what an addiction feels like, because if it is..... I like it. Nick |

That all sounds awesome - you are totally set up for next season now.
But you are obviously a very brave man - if your wife ever finds out how much you've spent on those outfits, she'll be onto you for a round the world trip in return!
Enjoy (just picked up a new alphas myself, I must admit, but paired with a Nitro rod)

Congrats on your new gear Nick, some nice stuff you've got there, Im sure you won't be disappointed. I'm just about to part with a bit of my hard-earned for a new fly rod (something I've been meaning to do for ages!). I've been wanting a bass on fly since I first started bassin' and hopefully this is the first step toward it.

Thanks Steve
I seem to be OK practicising in the local park, now it'll be a frustrating wait 'til the little wileys return!

G'day Pukka,
I've also crosed over to the dark side a few times. I've caught a miniscule bass, one mullet and a few freshwater herring on fly.
But, when I'm on my typical bass water there's often too much foliage to grab the back cast, so a baitcaster or 2-3 kg spin rig are still the weapons of choice. I can do a beaut roll cast (that's handy when there's a wall of bush over your shoulder) with the 7 weight fly rod in my pool - but, out in Tiger Country, the fly often lands 3 metres up in the trees.
Ron
PS: In tribute to your name on our site, a bit of poetry about Polo in India in the days of the British Raj goes like this:
'The regiment at Poona, would infinitely sooner, play alone at polo, a sort of solo polo; than to play a single chukka with a chap who wasn't pukka'

| Pukk, you'll catch nothing in the park you know? may as well have a chuck for a flattie, bream or sambo till the bass are back in the game. |

Hey Pukk, I go swatting at flies at the park too. Problem is I look like I'm being attacked bt a swarm of bees. Where do you learn the proper techniques when it comes to tossing a fly. Sometimes I get it right, but once I'm looking at casting at a fish it all goes to the poopoo. Nick |

Nick, I feel for ya mate it is a frustrating process to go from theoretical paddock casting to actual casting flies on the water and catching fish. 2 words of advice 'go fishing'. See if you can find a competent fly-fisho that is willing to go fishing for a day or two to give you a few pointers. It will come with time if you keep plugging away but good tuition helps a heap. Over summer I teach fly-fishing through free community classes down here on the far south coast, you may find a similar program up there? A few of the clubs offer similar programs also. If it all fails, do the long drive south early next season and I will take you out for a few days chucking fury things at bass (or EPs and co)

Nick,
Let's hope your wife buys you some nice presents from Cabela's or somewhere whilst in the states. Think positive she might buy you a fly rod. Do you think you should suggest it to her? Let her know how much money it will save if she buys while she is there. Be brave and give it a go.

CFK she actually brought me back a heap of bassin' lures. Mostly spinnerbaits, but she did bring me back a few packs of plastics and about 8 hard bodies. Funny thing is she brought back the same plastics that they are talking about in the evinrude add on the home page, maybe hearing it play over and over, every time I log on imbeded it into her subconscience. She's a good girl. Nick |
